Font of the month – September 2017

This months font is ‘Cartoonist Hand’ (www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/SF-Cartoonist-Hand). It has a clear but personal look to it, which detaches itself from the computer generated world and thus gives the feeling that the educator is talking to you directly.

Here you can see it in the Shoelace theme (moodle.org/plugins/pluginversions.php?plugin=theme_shoelace) – version 3.3.0.2:

with a new feature that I introduced last month called ‘Seamless’. As you can see the font plays an important piece in the puzzle. But it is not the whole story. You pick a font to suit many aspects of the site you are creating to match the needs of your learners. The font is an expression of the emotion and tone that you want to portray. It helps to establish the mental state of mind required to engage in the subject matter.

What are your thoughts? How much do you feel a font adds to your courses? Please comment below.

  • I quite like that font (although it’s difficult to see clearly with such a strong background image). I agree that it’s a nice ‘not a computer’ appearance, and feels much more ‘informal’ than many fonts.

    • That’s the thing with backgrounds, sometimes they can compliment and sometimes not. Getting a fine balance can be tricky. Sometimes it is just a matter of changing the colour or the font weight. I have experimented in the past with adding a translucent shading effect to the textual areas, which can help with readability. Themes though should allow you to do want you want to do and explore your creativity.
