MacBook Pro upgrade

Although I love Linux, and use it on all our servers and have a few computers at home running Ubuntu

…for my day to day personal computing needs I find Apple to be the best choice.

I have a new iPhone 6, a couple of iPads, a MacBook Air for travel, Apple TV, and a MacBook Mini just used for audio and producing our Moodle podcast.

But my main workhorse in a 2010 MacBook Pro. four years old is quite a long time these days, with new OS’s and updates. But rather than splash out for a new MacBook Pro I decided to upgrade the existing machine.

Using kits from OWC (Other World Computing) I’ve increased the memory from 4Gb to 8Gb, and replaced the old SATA drive with a 480Gb SSD.  The upgrade took less than an hour, following the video tutorials on the OWC website.

A quick clean, half a day reinstalling applications (I did a new installation of Mavericks rather than restoring from a Time Machine back because I wanted to ‘start again’ with a clean OS and not inherit all the previous settings and old config files), and it’s like having a new laptop again !

I can’t recommend OWC enough, great value, excellent support and service.
