Different browsers always handled the check boxxes in different ways, and Themes did too.
I believe Moodle HQ developers have made the decision that the older checkboxes will be replaced by the text and ticks now, so that argument is finished.

I was recently shown a screenshot of a course on a Moodle Workplace site where the checkboxes were visually improved (round) and moved to the left of the activity name instead of the far right. This made a lot more sense to me, looked great and was wonderful for people with accessibility issues using screen magnifiers. I really hope that this will be the future in Moodle 4.x instead of the boxes.

I agree Sarah, I’m really sad to see this going, as it’s one of the things that users REALLY like!
There has been a lot of discussion in the developers forums, and wider now, including some ideas about a plugin to add this functionality back in, but that appears far too complex to do via a plugin.
