Moodle 3.7 preview

Moodle 3.7 is released mid year 2018, what do we expect to see?

The simple news is that there are no earth-shattering new features in the release of Moodle, and one change which many users may not like (although it basically affects administrators).

  • Forum update: including back-end refactor, accessibility, in-page reply, star/favouriting of a discussion, manually locking a discussion, sorting of discussions, and private replies (goodness knows why this wasn’t there years ago?!)
  • Deprecating bootstrapbase (which means the Clean and More Themes) and introducing the new Classic theme in core. The Classic theme will retain a navigation block similar to the one in Clean. Many administrators may need to look at this issue, sooner rather than later.
  • Support for LTI 1.3
  • Further enhancing support for Open Badges v2
  • Learning analytics improvements: main items – create, import, export and delete models, collect learning analytics usage data in site registration, upcoming activities due insight.

Note that Moodle HQ have already said “…depending on our resources we may move some of these to 3.8” … so I would expect most of this to not arrive in 3.7.

  • Group messaging follow-ups; mainly around performance and security.
This clearly isn’t new feature at all, but fixing a recently introduced feature.
  • Accessibility improvements, some of these is related to the forum project, and others related to the accessibility of Boost.  As Moodle HQ are pushing Boost as “the answer”, then accessibility will have to be 100% and quickly.
