Regain search engine

This caught my interest recently… regain is a search engine for your desktop and or servers.

I downloaded the application and found it to be very useful and efficient. Not too difficult to set up and use, and as the blurb on the site says:

regain is a search engine similar to web search engines like Google, with the difference that you don’t search the web, but your own files and documents. Using regain you can search through large portions of data (several gigabytes!) in split seconds!

I was initially thinking about how to use this on my Apple Mac, or across my home network. But then I also thought about using it to search and index this site (although in-built Search available in the Blog menu is probably good enough), or our http://www.freemoodle.org site.

regain is written in Java and so it works on all Java compatible platforms (Windows, Linux, Mac OS, and others). The server search works with Java Server Pages (JSPs) and a tag library, the desktop search comes with its own small webserver.

regain is released under the open source license LGPL (Lesser General Public License) so it can be used for free without any time limit.
