Success or win

There are the pair of pair words ‘success’ / ‘failure’ and ‘win’ / ‘lose’. But are they the same?

Meaning

When we think of winning, we think we have succeeded. That we have become the top in a list of other competitors that have lost. That they didn’t succeed at being better than the winner. But have they really lost? They may have succeeded in their own way to be better than they were before or perhaps not so and failed. But this is not the same as winning, that to me is singular and implies that others have lost that despite their efforts it is seen as a negative thing. Negativity that has a psychological affect of negating all of the positives that were in their effort.

In order to learn and progress we need to combine both positive and negative reflection to guide us to improve and be better next time. To identify what will help us to succeed next time, even if we have won. Because if we think that any one time we have reached the top then the only way is down. That others will want to succeed more than you and in the end perform in ways you didn’t expect.

If we view the world as a small collection of winners and a large collection of losers. Which by the very nature of the concept the number of losers will be far greater because only one or the small few can win. Then there are lots of people whom will give up because of the negative connotations and not consider that they could be better next time. However, if we view the world in terms of success and failure then its a different matter. There is less negativity where even the failure is positive in getting to understand what went wrong and then how to correct it. That the more we succeed in our own ways we contribute to the overall success of the whole.

This is why teaching with positive reinforcement is so important. To be encouraging and guide the learner to achieve. But also use the negative aspects as understanding of what needs to improve. For the learner, they need to be subjective about themselves, reflect and understand that they make mistakes because of their very human nature and that they can be used in a positive manner to help them improve.

What do you think please?
