Moodle 3.11 activity completion

Did you upgrade to Moodle 3.11 yet and notice this ?

Activity dates and Activity completion conditions may be shown on the course page.

But gone are the familiar, and popular, checkboxes !

Replaced by colour coded text.

Some people miss the simple and visual boxes, and hate the additional space this nows takes up on the page.

Time will tell how well received this significant change will be.

Moodle 3.11 activity completion documentation is here:

  • This new approach takes up too much room and makes the course pages look messy. I was recently shown a screenshot of a course on a Moodle Workplace site where the checkboxes were visually improved (round) and moved to the left of the activity name instead of the far right. This made a lot more sense to me, looked great and was wonderful for people with accessibility issues using screen magnifiers. I really hope that this will be the future in Moodle 4.x instead of the boxes.

Different browsers always handled the check boxxes in different ways, and Themes did too.
I believe Moodle HQ developers have made the decision that the older checkboxes will be replaced by the text and ticks now, so that argument is finished.

    • I agree Sarah, I’m really sad to see this going, as it’s one of the things that users REALLY like!
There has been a lot of discussion in the developers forums, and wider now, including some ideas about a plugin to add this functionality back in, but that appears far too complex to do via a plugin.
      Sigh 🙁
