Following Scott…

Scott’s recent post really inspired me!

I loved Scott’s recent post here https://www.elearningworld.org/little-places-that-change-you/

It reminded me so much about myself.

I’ve seen Scott present a few times, and he is always good value – enthusiastic, and knowledgeable, and that’s why he will always be welcome at the New Zealand Moodle that I organise for example.

For a few years when I started presenting I always wondered if I was “good enough”.

Having been involved with Moodle for well beyond a decade, and e-learning in genera for almost two decades in various ways (feeling old reading that back), I feel fairly confident presenting now.

But as I started on the conference circuit, I have to say that I saw many presenters who I felt were ‘quite average’ to be honest.  And on a couple of occasions even keynotes that were absolutely dreadful.  Ironically that gave me confidence, lol – “If they can do it, I certainly can!” was my attitude.

So the strategy I’ve developed is actually quite simple:

  • Be honest – as writers might say: “speak with your own voice”
So I don’t try and “be” anything – just be myself
  • Be hard-working – to me that means trying my best to make the conference session (whether it’s a keynote, presentation, or workshop) useful and relevant for people !
  • Be entertaining !
Even though the information might be “right” and I know what I’m talking about, the session should be entertaining, fun, challenging, engaging, etc.  I like people to feel PART of whats happening – not just listening to someone else

And that’s it !  My recipe for success, lol.
