Moodle mini tip #1

Is there a shortcut URL to a course?

This is a question people sometimes ask.

Rather than using the full long URL to link to a course main page, is there a more friendly or simple way to do this?

The answer is “Yes” !

Usually a Moodle course is identified in the URL by it’s unique courseid number, like this:

https://www.moodlebites.com/course/view.php?id=62

But it is possible to use the course shortname value instead, to make things a little clearer, like this:

https://www.moodlebites.com/course/view.php?name=shortname

So in this case, we could use:

www.moodlebites.com/course/view.php?name=MBH5PFREE

Having the course shortname in the URL in this way is more friendly 🙂

  • Thanks for sharing this great tip. I wish Moodle would generate these friendlier URLs by default. Would be nice if there was a way to do this for categories too.

Generation of friendly URL’s is really a server issue, not just a Moodle issue.
However, it’s something that Moodle could potentially ‘take onboard’ as a project to make URL’s more user-friendly as an accessibility issue.
